Eighteen years ago, Lucy Flannery’s young life was shattered when her mother and little brother were murdered – a crime made all the more heartbreaking by the fact that the killer was her father. However, recently uncovered evidence proves that her father was wrongfully convicted. Reeling from this revelation, Lucy comes back to her hometown, both terrified and desperate to reconnect with the father whom she’d rejected.
Trespassing at her childhood home, Lucy finds herself facing down the county sheriff, Ben Paulson, who is as intrigued by this prodigal daughter as he is horrified by the legal misconduct which resulted in her father’s conviction all those years ago. And when things start to happen to Lucy, things which suggest that someone may not want her back in Dahlonega, Ben realizes that this professionally problematic attraction is the least of their worries.

18 years ago, Dahlonega, Georgia was rocked by two high-profile murders. One was solved immediately, with the guilty party sent to prison for murdering his pregnant wife and young son. Justice was delayed in the second case, with the murder of a teenage girl solved only the year before. But Dahlonega’s peace is shattered by the news that the evidence in that long-ago “solved” case now points to an unknown suspect and not Andrew Flannery, the man sitting in prison for the crime. Who committed that heinous crime long ago?18 years ago, Lucy Flannery lived through the horror of the murders of her mother and brother. Lucy began to travel down a path of addiction, violent behavior, rehabilitation and rebirth as Dr. Lucinda James, psychologist and college professor. But her father’s release from prison propels Lucinda James to travel back to Dahlonega and the world of Lucy Flannery in the hope of finding out what happened that fateful night. Sheriff Ben Paulson remembers 18 years ago very well, as that was when his teen sister Carly was murdered, a crime only solved the year before. Ben’s bitterness and rage over that event long ago spurred his choice of profession, but those emotions took a long time to get in check. When Lucy is brought into “his” station on a trespassing charge, the similar pasts of Ben and her create a bond between them. And that bond gets tested quite a few times as they seek the truth behind the Flannery murders.
This book was flat out amazing. It was well-written, the characters brilliantly developed and the plot riveting. That is the straightforward description - it is much harder to define what made this romantic suspense novel stand out from others written by the plethora of authors in this genre. Ms Clark O’Neill’s books always seem to capture the special, individual vibe each of her storylines are trying to convey. In this novel, you “felt” in your soul how lives were shattered, spirits broken, by those murders 18 years ago. You “felt” the connection Ben and Lucy had, and understood why it was there. When I hit the end of this book, I grasped what the expression “capturing lightning in a bottle” meant. This author has done that!
Although I seem to stress the darker side of the book, there were plenty of lighter moments to balance the “heavy.” There was plenty of witty banter to satisfy my usual craving for it - Sabrina and Duncan certainly mastered the insult-as-flirting trick! It was great to catch up with Ben’s cousin Ainsley (from Avarice) and glimpse a view of her HEA. And leave it to a chicken (yes, a chicken - I pictured a Plymouth Rock hen, but I could be wrong) to steal the story, Ben’s sanity and our hearts. If I could give this book 10 stars, I would in a second! Excellent, excellent read!

Shattered The Southern Comfort Series/Dahlonega Trilogy Book 1 edition by Lisa Clark O'Neill Romance eBooks Reviews
Wow, this book is a champ! She described a characters with flaws beautifully and made that character feel like she or he is someone we know, or remind you of yourself. I love how she describe the settings, the characters, even the minor ones and there were few times I assumed and was wrong until the end. I have read all of her books and love every of them. Highly recommended for you to read.
I love curling up with one of Lisa's books and forgetting that there might be anything else I am supposed to do. I keep telling myself I am going to try and stretch it out but it is just sad to lie to myself when I know I will not put it down except for basic life sustaining tasks.
I will eagerly await Lisa's next book and try really hard not to plead piteously for her to produce faster! 😉
I have read every book written by Lisa Clark O'Neill and enjoyed every one. Her books have just the right mix of mystery, suspense, romance and characters that seem to come to life. I must say that "Shattered" kept me guessing right up to the end. The only problem I have with the books is I just can't put them down! I read them so quickly and then I have to try and wait patiently for the next book.
Lisa Clark O'Neill's books never let me down. They have suspense, humor, and protagonists that are well fleshed out and make you want to meet them in real life. They are never perfect, but no one wants to read about perfect people. It's the human flaws that make them so easy to care about. Shattered both satisfied me and left me wanting more. Well done, Lisa. You're a fantastic story teller. Keep 'em coming, please!
Not very often i give a 5 star, it has a great beginning, middle, and ending. Most importantly great likeable characters. You see why they fell in love, no stupid misunderstanding . You watch them become a couple threw out the story not just in the last chapter like so many bad story lines these days. Very well done Miss O'Neill ! Thank you for taking me on such a journey. Looking forward to more of your stories!!
I am a huge fan of Lisa Clark O’Neill’s books but this is one of my favorites. I had been in a bit of a reading slump and enjoyed this so much it pulled me out of it entirely! I likes the mystery in this one because there was no one size fits all solution to a miserable family situation. I like that there was a lot of options as to who the villain might be too. It wasn’t obvious and the love story had a very natural progression. All in all this is an amazing book! 5 Stars!
The story is superior, the characters are terrific, the mystery is exciting and complex but what really puts this story into the stratosphere is the dialog. It just doesn't get better than this. And the dog and his pet chicken-LOL!! Oh my goodness! What an amazing author. Some writers get weaker after many books. Ms O'Neill seems to be getting even better although I have absolutely loved every one if them. 10 stars and waiting for the next release.
This can certainly be read as a stand alone but reading her books in sequence will allow a deeper experience. Ben and his family's story is incredibly gripping and impacts this story. Besides, I can't imagine not wanting to read them all.
