It’s 1813. Napoleon’s army needs to retreat from Spain and return to France, but the main pass across the jagged peaks of the Pyrenees is within easy reach of the British forces.
In his search for an alternative escape route, Alaine Bellanger discovers more than just an ancient mountain trail. High up, in a cleft between two peaks, he finds something very strange indeed — and someone even stranger.
But who can he tell?
And who would believe him?
(A long short story 17,000 words.)
The Army of the Night eBook Paul Collis
I have to agree with other reviewers. What is revealed in the mountains is essential enough to the plot that it shouldn't be spoiled. Suffice it to say, this is a fantastic story, and the characters and situation will haunt me for some time to come. It's written very well, and has the feel of something written in a previous age by Arthur Machen, or one of his contemporaries from the late 19th or early 20th century. High praise indeed.Product details

The Army of the Night eBook Paul Collis Reviews
"The Army of the Night" is a small, very enjoyable book. It is based on true historical facts but with a very bizarre twist! I bought it because the author mentioned it in his book "The Scottish Movie" as an afterthought, relating to a chapter of that story. However, I found it fascinating just by itself and couldn't put it down.
This is written in a quick, understated way that really helps create the atmosphere. I'm shelving it as fantasy, although I'd rather be more specific, but that's a spoiler. What Alaine finds & the reactions surrounding it are what really made the story pop for me. Perfect Halloween read.
I’m not normally a big fan of historical fiction, but I thought the basic premise of this novella added a supernatural twist which would make for an interesting story. Unfortunately, that didn’t turn out to be the case, at least not in my opinion.
The first few pages actually grabbed my attention with a mysterious stranger delivering a secret message in the dead of night. After a promising opening, however, the author made it clear that his knowledge and interest in historical details were going to play a much bigger role than his desire to craft a compelling story.
The odd disruption at the book’s beginning was regrettably a consistent problem throughout the rest of the story, as well. A bit of drama, followed by extended explanations of the historical, political and military facts of the time. Sadly, none of these protracted commentaries proved to be very interesting. While some of the details were important to the plot, they could have been woven into the story without grinding the entire flow to a halt with a history lesson.
I also found the formal dialogue to be a challenge. I’m sure it’s historically accurate, but there’s plenty of precedent for authors taking liberties with historical accuracy in order to make the writing easier to follow for modern readers.
Overall, I still believe the idea of inserting a supernatural element into a historical setting could be interesting. If nothing else, the author deserves credit for making the attempt. Unfortunately, the execution wasn’t especially successful.
An enjoyable, fast-moving book. I usually shy away from books that contain supernatural characters (who did you think he was going to find in a secluded area high in the mountains?), but I'm glad I didn't take a pass on this one. Basically, a spy for Napoleon makes a deal with (not) the Devil after hearing the tale of a previous such deal, but not everything turns out the way he expected or hoped,
I have to agree with other reviewers. What is revealed in the mountains is essential enough to the plot that it shouldn't be spoiled. Suffice it to say, this is a fantastic story, and the characters and situation will haunt me for some time to come.
