The Education of Hyman Kaplan eBook Leo Rosten Reviews
I have been reading this book again and again over the past 50 years. It never ceases to be sheer joy. The author (also known as Leonard Ross) wrote extensively for the New Yorker. His book The Joys of Yiddish is also a classic.
My parents had this book when I was a child but it was lost along the way; I always remembered it and was lucky to find this
copy from 1931. It even smells like the book I read when I was little. It brings me back to the time when nearly all my grandparents, great aunt and uncles spoke English with Russian or German accents. This story about immigrants trying to learn English and refusing to be vanquished by adversity is the best-should be read by all of us especially today.
Incredibly entertaining.
Very entertaining & clever. I bought it for a friend at her request & managed to read part of it before
giving it to her. I would recommend this as a light amusing read.
Laugh-out loud funny!!!
Along with The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, this book is the most accurate and engaging example of dialect written in English. It is extremely funny, poignant, memorable, and wise--all at the same time. This is one of the 25 books I would take to a desert island and one I have given as a special gift many, many times. Rosten's book, The Joys of Yiddish, is also a treasure.
I don't give 5-star reviews, but this is a book I loved as a child, and it was a pure joy to read it again as an adult. Leo Rosten was something of an expert on Yiddish. In a lighter vein he wrote these charming stories set in a night ESL school. His protagonist, Hyman Kaplan is an irrepressible goof who mangles the English language and causes a lot of consternation for his teacher and fellow pupils and lots of fun for his readers. I hope you will be as charmed by it as I am. Though it is now out of print, copies can be had on line.
